Each summer from May to August, the VG Baseball team plays in a softball league with 14 other church teams. We play weekly at parks across London. The games offer fun, exercise and fellowship for the team and a great social time for the fans. We take anyone who wants to play. And if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. Often we have more fans than players – they keep us going!
In 2008, we placed 6th in the overall standings. The league tournament takes place in early September. Despite being rained out after four games (winning three and tying one), VG qualified for the finals the next week with seven other teams. After winning our first, we went into double overtime in the second game, finally losing 24-23. But that meant we moved into the consolation finals. We played against a hard fought, very late game and won 19-14 against Hillside placing third in the overall standings - just minutes before the lights went out!
Besides winning the biggest trophy (which is always nice) the best thing was the gracious sportsmanship always demonstrated and the encouraging teamwork, led by our coach Don Shirley and our excellent scorekeeper and lead fan, Shirley Ella.
